During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, Armenians were full of hope that with the victory of the Russians, Western Armenia would be liberated from the Turkish yoke. Bayezid Fortress is besieged. A small Armenian and Russian contingent stands against a large Kurdish and Turkish army. If Bayezid Fortress falls, the Muslims will quickly enter Yerevan, and then Tiflis. There is no water and food in the citadel. The number of sick and wounded is gradually increasing. The Turks are slaughtering the surrounding Armenian population. Vardan, aka the madman, is furiously watching the Armenians who are voluntarily surrendering to the slaughter. It is necessary to get the letter asking for help out of the enemy\'s encirclement and deliver it to the Russian army general, Ter-Ghukasov. Vardan dares to take on the responsibility of a martyr.
